SUMMARY:10th European Conference for Sustainable Cities and Towns
DESCRIPTION:The 10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns (ESCT) will take place on 1-3 October in Aalborg\, Denmark. \nAll cities\, partners and experts seeking to contribute to the sustainable transformation of our cities and regions are cordially invited to attend the 2024 edition of European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns\, which also marks the 30th Anniversary of the Aalborg Charter (1994) and the 20th Anniversary of the Aalborg Commitments (2004). To mark the occasion\, as well as respond to the needs of the ongoing climate emergency\, we are setting our highest bar for success yet. \nWorkshop: “Powering renewable energy solutions through circular strategies” which will take place on 2 October\, 14:00-15:30. \nEurope must transition towards sustainable energy production and sharply increase the share of renewables in the energy mix to deliver on the Paris Agreement. Ambitious policies have been proposed\, including the EU Rooftop Strategy\, requiring PVs on all new public and commercial buildings by 2026. But what happens to PV panels when their lifespan is over? At the same time\, energy storage is critical to make renewable energy reliable for large scale deployment\, and storage capacity needs to triple by 2030 and increase tenfold by 2050. But how do we secure a sustainable and just value chain of the materials needed to build them?Circular strategies address both ends of the value chain: materials needed to produce these technologies as well as the waste that is produced. Explore the crossroads between renewable energy and a circular economy and discuss the strategies cities are employing to facilitate this transition. \nDiscover more

SUMMARY:COP28
DESCRIPTION:COP28 UAE will be a milestone moment when the world will take stock of its progress on the Paris Agreement. The first Global Stocktake (GST) will provide a comprehensive assessment of progress since adopting the Paris Agreement. The GST will help align efforts on climate action\, including putting measures in place to bridge the gaps in progress. The COP28 UAE Presidency will work to ensure that the world responds to the GST with a clear plan of action. \nDiscover more

SUMMARY:SESA Webinar - Enhancing adoption of waste-to-energy solutions for clean cooking in Africa
DESCRIPTION:According to the Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report 2023\, developed jointly by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)\, International Energy Agency (IEA)\, World Bank\, United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD)\, and World Health Organization (WHO)\, highlights that in 2021\, more than 600 million people lacked access to clean cooking fuels and technologies in the Sub-Saharan African countries. Furthermore\, under the Paris Climate Agreement\, access to clean cooking fuels and technologies is integral for making affordable energy available to the people. This shall also be a cost-effective measure to tackle climate change. \nThus\, considering these scenarios\, it becomes necessary to take desired actions to improve the livelihood and well-being of the people as well as create sustainable business opportunities. In this webinar\, the speakers are representatives from diverse domains such as technology/solution providers\, policy\, researchers and businesses\, who will address and discuss the possibilities to enhance the adoption of waste-to-energy technologies and solutions that can help in improving access to clean cooking in the African countries. This webinar is a part of the second course of the SESA capacity building programme\, a self-paced e-learning format which focuses on clean cooking and waste-to-energy. The courses are available on the NUA campus platform.

SUMMARY:COP27
DESCRIPTION:Achieving Energy Security\, Independence and Sustainability with Renewables focused Local Action \nClimate and energy are inextricably linked. The climate emergency is more urgent than ever\, and the world is also facing an energy security crisis that has ripple effects across multiple dimensions. Transitioning to renewables synergises across both\, contributing to climate change mitigation while also improving resilience. It is clear that urgent action is needed on all fronts—but what concrete actions can allow this to be realised? \nDiscover more
