SUMMARY:UNEP-CCC Webinar: Clean Cooking with Agricultural Residues
DESCRIPTION:Creating access to clean cooking is essential for climate action and was underscored at the recent high-level summit on clean cooking for Africa\, organized by the IEA in May 2024. Charcoal and firewood remain major contributors to deforestation and account for 60-80% of black carbon emissions across Africa\, driving substantial net carbon emissions. Using briquettes and pellets from agricultural residues as fuel can offer a sustainable alternative that protects forest ecosystems\, supports local businesses\, and improves the health of women and children. \nTo achieve the SDG7 target for universal access to affordable\, reliable\, and modern energy services\, it is essential to place biomass-based and lower-tier cooking technologies within the broader context of the clean energy transition. \nJoin us in this webinar to learn about\n\nClean cooking as a climate action agenda\, how this links to the broader energy transition.\nBenefits\, opportunities and limitations of using agricultural residues as clean cooking fuel.\nInnovative and sustainable solutions from Malawi and Sierra Leone.\nPrograms supporting access to clean cooking solutions and the adoption of sustainable cooking fuels.\n\nOrganized by the SESA project\, this session will showcase successful initiatives and provide insights into making clean cooking a reality in communities across Africa.

SUMMARY:SESA Webinar - Enhancing adoption of waste-to-energy solutions for clean cooking in Africa
DESCRIPTION:According to the Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report 2023\, developed jointly by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)\, International Energy Agency (IEA)\, World Bank\, United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD)\, and World Health Organization (WHO)\, highlights that in 2021\, more than 600 million people lacked access to clean cooking fuels and technologies in the Sub-Saharan African countries. Furthermore\, under the Paris Climate Agreement\, access to clean cooking fuels and technologies is integral for making affordable energy available to the people. This shall also be a cost-effective measure to tackle climate change. \nThus\, considering these scenarios\, it becomes necessary to take desired actions to improve the livelihood and well-being of the people as well as create sustainable business opportunities. In this webinar\, the speakers are representatives from diverse domains such as technology/solution providers\, policy\, researchers and businesses\, who will address and discuss the possibilities to enhance the adoption of waste-to-energy technologies and solutions that can help in improving access to clean cooking in the African countries. This webinar is a part of the second course of the SESA capacity building programme\, a self-paced e-learning format which focuses on clean cooking and waste-to-energy. The courses are available on the NUA campus platform.

SUMMARY:Final Workshop - Urban Pathways project
DESCRIPTION:Final Workshop of the IKI supported “Urban Pathways – Supporting Low Carbon Plans for Urban Basic Services in the context of the New Urban Agenda” project took place beginning of November 2022. \nFor the last five years\, the Urban Pathways project has taken a very practical and demand-driven approach working with countries and cities that were highly motivated\, and that had a supportive policy environment. The project contributed to reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions by focusing on integrated implementation programmes in the area of mobility\, waste management and energy as well as sector coupling. With support of Urban Pathways\, a total of 14 pilot projects in 10 cities have been prepared and implemented ranging from a pedestrian zone\, a mobility startup acceleration hub and energy efficient tiny house in Nairobi (Kenya); Ecozones in Belo Horizonte (Brazil); to electric mobility systems in cities such as Kochi (India)\, Hanoi (Vietnam) or Quito (Ecuador). \nSESA project was presented by Wuppertal Institute.  \nDiscover more
