As part of the SESA project, the proposed smart solar irrigation system is an integral part of Havenhill Synergy’s Farm Fuse Initiative, aimed at supporting smallholder farmers in their mini-grid host communities. Currently offering a range of services like improved seeds, mechanization, and market access, the initiative seeks to further enhance its impact by incorporating smart solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS).

This innovative solution aims to revolutionize farming practices by providing smallholder farmers with consistent and dependable irrigation throughout the year. The primary goal is to uplift farmers’ productivity, income, and overall living standards within the Farm Fuse partner network.

The implementation strategy involves deploying smart solar drip irrigation systems to specific geographical clusters, each comprising 10 farmers cultivating approximately 50 acres per cluster. This system will be replicated across four clusters spanning two mini-grid host communities initially and later scaled to more communities Havenhill currently operates from. Collectively, this project aims to cultivate approximately 200 acres across the clusters. Comprising four key components – PV generator, submersible systems, motor cable/electrical system, and overhead storage/water distribution system – this integrated solution is meticulously designed for efficient and sustainable operation.

The PV generator, encompassing solar panels, lithium-ion batteries, and a sun switch, forms the system’s energy backbone. The submersible system includes a DC pump, PS2 controller, well probe, and flow sieve, ensuring precise water delivery. The motor cable/electrical system, equipped with essential kits like a cable split kit, surge protector, pressure sensors, and grounding rod, guarantees safe and optimized electrical functioning. Finally, the overhead storage and water distribution system incorporates structures, tanks, meters, switches, pipes, connectors, valves, and fittings for effective water management.

By implementing this solar-powered irrigation system, smallholder farmers will transcend reliance on rain-fed agriculture, enabling year-round cultivation. This extension of the growing season is expected to yield significantly higher crop outputs and diversification, translating into augmented incomes for farmers and bolstering food security within the communities.

This initiative not only addresses immediate agricultural needs but also aligns with sustainable development goals by promoting eco-friendly and renewable energy practices. The smart irrigation system reduces dependency on fossil fuels, mitigating environmental impact while fostering agricultural resilience.
